JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Utilities Operator, is responsible for the safe and reliable start-up, operation and continuous monitoring of combustion turbines, heat recovery steam generators, steam turbines, generators, boilers, chill water production units, steam distribution system, electric distribution system, chilled water distribution system and ancillary equipment. Also performs selective maintenance on various in plant and/or satellite equipment.

PRIMARY DUTIES

1. Controls, maintains, and monitors system voltage, amps, Kw, KV, pressures, temperatures, flow and other critical parameters of combustion turbines, steam turbines, generators, chilled water production units, boilers, and electric, steam, and chilled water distribution systems. Operates combustion turbines, steam turbines, generators, as well as chillers, boilers and ancillary equipment.

2. Takes effective action to reduce the effect of equipment casualties.

3. Performs required plant water chemistry analysis and maintains chemistry controls for both the CHP plant and the chilled water systems.

4. Updates Operational Procedures.

5. Oversees fuel oil and natural gas transfer and storage at assigned plant.

6. Performs selective corrective, preventive, predictive maintenance, post maintenance testing, and housekeeping activities.

7. Initiates work orders for identification and repair of in plant and satellite equipment.

8. Maintains required records of operations in a clear and precise manner. Oversees completion of all prescribed records and logs at assigned plants.

9. During back shifts, weekends, and holidays, may act as the primary representative for contact with customers and the public requiring accurate logging of complaints and resolution of the problems or passing of the information on to the appropriate supervisor immediately.

10. Maintains safe working conditions; identifies and corrects or reports unsafe conditions in work areas; performs duties in accordance with all applicable safety policies and procedures. Stands watch as assigned.

11. Responsible for lining up system valves and components for service.

12. Responsible for placing in service and taking out of service components that cannot be controlled from the control room.

13. Ensures compliance with Environmental Regulations and Permits.

14. Complies with all operating and maintenance procedures.

15. Performs other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager, Director of Operations, or Production Supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED.

Experience:Three (3) years experience in operating stationary or marine boilers.

Other: Maryland Second Class Stationary Engineer's License. Must possess and maintain a valid class C driver's license or equivalent and be insurable by a vehicles insurance carrier within the UMCP guidelines.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Satisfactory completion (grade 70 or better) of the CHP Power Plant Operations Fundamentals Training Program. Effective understanding of the principles and regulatory requirements for overseeing operations involving water management quality, outfall controls, fuel systems, asbestos controls, and metering. Demonstrated maturity, reliability, and judgment to stand watch. Ability to communicate orally and in writing concerning routine paperwork. Must meet OSHA/MOSH safety requirements for all personal and plant safety. Satisfactory completion of the GE gas turbine, HRSG, BPT/ G, Plant Auxiliary Systems, Chilled Water System, and EDS system "watch station qualification cards". Satisfactory completion of GE 10/1 Gas Turbine Basic Operator Training Program.·Ability to meet or exceed attendance standards.

OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Ability to climb and tolerate heights up to 100 feet and to tolerate confined spaces. Ability to lift up to 90 lbs. Ability to operate manual shift transmission vehicles. Ability to work rotating shifts involving weekends, holidays, back shifts, and overtime - employee is considered Essential. Subject to random drug testing.
